No. That doesn't make sense. They're not necessarily in the middle (the exact centre) of the car. If they're in the middle seat of three seats at the front or way in the back, they're not in the middle of the car. They're simply in the middle of that row.

A car or SUV has a front and a back seat. If there is a third row in an SUV, it's called the "third row" or even the "way back."

No matter how much it may defy logic, if you are sitting in the row of seats directly behind the driver, you are in the back seat.

Good point. Having said that, it's also unlikely you'd get seven seats in three rows either! It's likely to be two people up front and then two rows of three seats behind. That's eight seats!

2 in front bucket seats. 3 in bench seat in the back. 2 in smaller bench in the way back.

This is pretty common in midsize SUVs here. Many times the way back seats are a gimmick, not really usable for anything other than short rides with small children. But it allows the manufacturers to market as 7 seats.

Full size, truck-based SUVs might have 8 as the claimed capacity, with a wider way back bench.

The only person I know with a car with more than two rows of seats does call them the front, back and middle.
On our long drive to Glasgow, my husband and I sat in the front, my three kids sat in the middle and my friends sat in the back.
