Suppose there is a number that has to be entered in the IVR system before I can reach a live insurance rep but I enter one digit incorrectly. For example number is 123456 but I entered 124456 in the automated system so what do I need to say if someone asks whether I have entered an incorrect number?

1) I entered one digit incorrectly. I entered 4 in place of 3.

2) I entered one incorrect digit. I entered 4 in place of 3.

I suppose you could use either one. (I might say, "I goofed and typed a four instead of a three.")

Both are fine. They sound a bit stiff, though.

I'd say something like:

- I typed a wrong number--a four instead of a three.
- I got a number wrong. I typed four instead of three.
- I screwed up and typed a four instead of a three.

And you shouldn't give such information away. Just say you goofed.
