Halliday: I liked how things were when they were.... When it was a game.

Why is the 'like' in the past simple? I would expect that he said 'I like ...' (in the present simple, which means that that is my feeling now).

What do you think?

Halliday doesn't like how things are now. Halliday liked how things were then.
