In the following sentence, I am unsure if I need to put an 'and'. I like the sound of the sentence without an 'and'.

- I love my cute, mischievous dog.

Or can I omit the comma? 'I love my cute mischievous dog.'

I'm thinking if I add another adjective to it, then I'll have to use 'and':

- I love my cute, mischievous and intelligent dog.

I'm unsure.

Thank you.

You can optionally add an Oxford comma before "and" in the last sentence.

Great! 'I love my cute, mischievous dog' really sounds much better to me than placing an 'and' between the two adjectives.

Please help me to understand why the 'and' is not necessary in the sentence. I thought it was necessary.

Thank you!

I wouldn't even use "and" with a list of adjectives in that context.

I love my big, brown, cute, mischievous, intelligent dog!

Hmmm...in this case, when is an 'and' a must?

An "and" is usually required in a list of nouns, and in a list of adjectives without a noun after them.

I have a cat, two dogs and three hamsters.
I have cats, dogs and hamsters.

My dog is cute, clever, mischievous and intelligent.

Why is a comma needed above? No comma is used below.

1. 'A pretty little girl'—quoted from Oxford.
2. 'A handsome young man'—quoted from Macmillan.
3. 'He was a lovely little boy'—quoted from Longman.

I find it difficult to identify coordinate adjectives.

1. I love my cute, mischievous dog.
2. I love my cute purebred dog.

In 1, they are coordinate adjectives because they carry the same weight.
In 2, they are not coordinate adjectives because 'purebred' carries more weight.

Have I understood correctly?
