I poured milk in the bottle.

Is the above sentence OK? I understand, in place of "in", "into" needs to be used but I don't know the reason. If I am correct, can you please explain why "into" needs to be used.
 
When one is moving something from one place to inside another place, "into" is correct.
 
What about such a sentence? "There are apples in/into the basket." Which preposition is correct?
