Suppose John has a Russian citizenship which he wants to renounce. He then wants to become an American citizen. He says the following in a conversation to a friend:

I'd like to renounce the Russian citizenship and get an American one.

Are the articles "the" and "an" used correctly, and is the thought itself expressed naturally?
