Suppose John has a Russian citizenship which he wants to renounce. He then wants to become an American citizen. He says the following in a conversation to a friend:

I'd like to renounce the Russian citizenship and get an American one.

Are the articles "the" and "an" used correctly, and is the thought itself expressed naturally?

Does it work like this:

I'd like to renounce my Russian citizenship and get/obtain/acquire American citizenship.
 
I'd like to renounce my Russian citizenship and acquire US citizenship.
