Is the word order right here? - What do you think are the Russian national characteristics?
I took it from a Student's Book "Matrix" for grade 9 students by Oxford University. Printed in Russia.

As far as I know if a question has been already posed, as done here by "What do you think", the the rest of the sentence should continue in normal order but not question word order.
So I would put it as - What do you think the Russian national characteristics are?

Yes, your order is more correct but it's quite common to use the word order of the original when the subject phrase is long as it is here.
