Are the following sentences natural with very much? My old course book (written by non-native speakers of English) says they are less common than similar sentences with very.

1) I'm very much worried about her.
2) I'm very much surprised.

They're grammatically correct but the coursebook is absolutely right that they are no longer common. We would omit "much" these days.
