What's wrong with this sentence? In my opinion "are based" part must be changed!

In 1831, English physicist, Michael Farady, discovered the principle of electromagnetic induction, which the electric motor and the electric generator are based.
 
What's wrong with this sentence? In my opinion "are based" part must be changed!

In 1831, English physicist, Michael Farady, discovered the principle of electromagnetic induction, which the electric motor and the electric generator are based.

Either "are based on" or "on which...are based".

Too many commas.
 
I like "upon which..." or "...based on."
 
What about "upon" instead of "on" ?
