"Even if, as a thought experiment, we assume a kind of nineteenth-century scientific realism - in which, even though some scientists' interpretations of natural phenomena themselves can be supposed to exist wholly independent of either observation or interpretation - no such realist supposition can be made about "language behaviour," because this beahviour is both human and fundamentally normative."

Why is it "independent" instead of "independently"?

Thanks!

It's adjectival: natural phenomena are wholly independent of.... (compare, to exist wholly and independently of / to exist wholly, independently of)

I don't really get it. Isn't the author telling us how scientists' interpretations exist? The answer would be independantly.

I think the person is using the verb in a copular style.
