Is "in the sea" an adjective or adverb in "I love swimming in the sea"?
In analyzing "I love swimming in the sea." , I came up with the following:
I (Subject) + love (Verb) + swimming in the sea (gerund noun phrase as Object)
My understanding is that the gerund noun phrase is made up by “swimming” as the head noun + prepositional phrase “in the sea” as the modifier.
My question is:
Is the prepositional modifier “in the sea”
(1) an ADJECTIVE describing a NOUN, i.e. the kind of “swimming” I like?
OR
(2) an ADVERB describing WHERE I love to swim”
