Is it right to say "I may travel this weekend. It depends ON IF my wife will recover... " Would ON WHETHER sound better?
 
Is it right to say "I may travel this weekend. It depends on how soon my wife will recover... " Would ON WHETHER sound better?

I think, 'If' or 'whether' would not work here.

And I think whether does work:
It depends on whether my wife recovers or not.
 
I have a very strong preference for whether over if in that sentence.

I agree. "Whether" is made for sentences like this. I'd consider "if" to be a poor second choice.

You could also say, "It depends on my wife recovering."
