Many people visited hospitals for hair loss problems last years, and 50% of them were people in their 20s and 30s.
Visit by people in their 40s grew by 5.9% and visits by those in their 50s went up by 2.2%.

This question is part of 'TOFEL Writting Practice' problem of materials and I thought it would be correct to add the preposition in to "last years" to indicate "in the last year", but he said it wasn't, and I fancy know if it's because he doesn't use the preposition in do well, and if so, could you explain why it would be awkward to use "in the last year"?

And also, I was wondering if when you say age and year, you put '-s' after the number, but how do you spell '-s' here and what does that mean?

What you quoted has several grammar mistakes. Where did you get it from? Can you please cite it properly?
