matter or problem?

Does "matter" also work in this sentence? What is the fundamental difference between "problem" and "matter"?

ex) We were faced with the problem(matter?) of finding a way out of the forest.
 
A problem calls for a solution or an action while a matter does not. So, only "problem" fits the sentence.
 
I agree with Ted, but don't be surprised to see occasionally this kind of understatement:

Our frequent trips to the USA have been totally screwed by this little matter of the global pandemic.

Note my corrections above. You must leave a space before an opening bracket.
