Hallo,

What is the name of the wooden box that a preacher preaches from when he stands in front of the church? Is it an altar?

Thank you!

The altar is the big table. The box with stairs leading up into it is the pulpit.

A "pulpit."

Pulpit denotes a religious setting. Podium would be used in the business or educational setting.

Preachers have a tendency to be religious, in my experience.;-)

In churches where there is only one such box and it serves both as a pulpit (for preaching) and a lectern (for the readings), it's called an ambo, I believe.

Ah, interesting. I had always thought that the pulpit was the top part of the actual structure, the box in which the preacher stands, and that the lectern was the sloping wooden stand on which the Bible (or other text) sits.

Ambo is an addition to my vocab! Thanks.
