Can we use the following rule for sports: we use 'play' with team sports, 'go' with sports ending in ing and do with individual sports not ending in ing?

I think I know what you're talking about but please give us example sentences for each usage.

You could say you're going swimming, but in that case you're probably not taking about doing it competitively.

I want to teach sport related vocabulary. Seeing different examples, I found that for team sports like football, volleyball, etc, the verb play is used as a collocation like play football. However, for individual sports like yoga and jogging either -ing or 'do' is used. For those sports ending in -ing we can use go like 'go swimming. For others, we use 'do' like do gymnastics.

Yes, that's what I thought you were getting at. However, I repeat - please give us full example sentences for each usage. That way, we can see whether you're correctly applying the rules you've detailed above.

I wouldn't consider yoga a sport. Or jogging. Instead, both are activities. Judo is a sport. Tennis is s sport. Racquetball is a sport. Handball is a sport. Running is a sport if done competitively. Swimming can be a sport.

I play football on Mondays.
I go swimming every Saturday.
I do gymnastics in a gym.

So can we say activities are not competitive but sports are competitive?
