Hello what is the meaning of point out the obvious. I didn't understand this sentence:
(Speaker is saying that she's sad about not seeing the real personality of the man to whom speaking. She knows that he is a good man and doesn't want to hurt her feelings. Then says this...)

You're trying not to point out the obvious... except it wasn't obvious to someone selfish like me.

Thanks,

Sinem

To point out means to identify or bring to notice. To point out the obvious would, therefore, mean to identify or bring to notice something that is obvious.

To tell you the truth, the sentence doesn't make much sense to me either. Do you have more context that you can bring to this discussion? That might help (me, at least).

Here speaker is sad because she understands that the guy is a good person and she was wrong as thinking that he is not. She confesses as this:

“I was wrong,” she says. “Look at you. You don’t even know what to say right now because you’re trying not to hurt my feelings. You’re trying not to point out the obvious . . . except it wasn’t obvious to someone selfish like me. You're noble.”

I didn't understand this sentence especially: except it wasn’t obvious to someone selfish like me.
