Dear teacher, there seems to be some confusion on the correct answer of the following question, and I would choose choice B (from / over). May I ask for your comment(s)? Thanks and regards.

The Janissaries were mainly recruited _______ conquered Christian lands and gained great power _______ Süleyman the Magnificent in the sixteenth century.

A) across / after
B) from / over
C) within / by
D) in / under
E) over / before

The sentence is grammatical with B but I think D is the correct answer.
