I saw sentences like this:

Present at the meeting were Tom, Allen, and Mary.

I think "Present" here is an adjective. Can an adjective be the subject of a sentence?
 
The sentence is transposed from:

Tom, Allen and Mary were present at the meeting.

What is the subject of the sentence?
