For those that don't know, a 'bike' can be a pushbike (bicycle) or a motorbike (motorcycle).
A standard pushbike is never not in gear, so any reference to putting a bike in gear, if made by someone who understands the language, can only logically refer to a motorbike.

You don't have to put a car in neutral (using the gear lever) to start it, as long as you put your foot down on the clutch. This disengages the gear so you can start it without the car kangarooing forward and stalling. I am talking, of course, about cars with a manual gearbox. Having driven an automatic car only once (and hating it), I can't speak knowledgeably about that.
In any case, to start the car, you put the key in the ignition and turn it (or these days, apparently, put an electronic card in a slot and push a button).

US government standards require that cars with automatic transmissions can start only when the transmission is in park.
Or have a fob in your pocket and push a button.

Tufguy, please note that in this context, to start means "to make the engine run". You may be thinking of starting moving.

My dad's old Thunderbird (1956) would start in neutral, but would not start in park. Must have been a faulty switch. He considered it a theft deterrent.
Automatic transmission cars will start in park or neutral. If you are driving along and the car stalls, you don't want to have to come to a full stop in traffic, shift to park, and then re-start the car. You can drop into neutral, start, and go back into drive.
