[Idiom] put on a play

Which of the following sentences is acceptable?

(1) Our teacher had us put on a play.
(2) Our teacher had us perform a drama.
 
Which of the following sentences is acceptable?

(1) Our teacher had us put on a play.
(2) Our teacher had us perform a drama.
Both are acceptable.
 
I prefer the first, though. ;-)
 
You can also "present" a play.
 
I like the first one as well because it sounds different and it makes the sentence to be more interesting.
