please could you explain the meaning of "putting in time" ?

Tapies.
– "putting in time" means to dedicate a certain amount of your time to a specific activity. The implication is usually that you are making a special effort.
"If I want to get fit I must start putting in time at the gym".
"I like to put in some time helping my son with his homework".

It can also refer to a worker who has a lot of experience or has shown his loyalty to the company. He's put in a lot of time, so he deserves this promotion.
