Hello.

I have always wondered if there is a rule for distinguishing " red with emotion " from " red from activity ".

What do you think of my proposals?

A) You are very red on the face. What is wrong?
B) I have just quarrelled with my nextdoor neighbour.
I am red with anger.

A) You are very red on the face. What is wrong?
B) I have been keeping my head down because of a ball that fell down the well.

What do you make of it?

Thank you.

The first is OK. I don't get the second.

In BrE, it's "red in the face".

There are many causes for a red face - rage, embarrassment, alcohol, cold, stress, and more but I'm not aware of any differentiation in terms regarding the cause.

There are a lot of synonyms for a red face, but they don't necessarily reflect the cause. Personally, I like the words 'ruddy', 'flush', and 'florid'.

I always associate 'ruddy' with drinking, but that's probably just my personal association, not a standard.

For me "blushing" is due to embarrassment and "flushing" is a reaction to certain food/drink or exercise.

How about This example:

Her eyes were red from crying.

That's fine (although there was no need to capitalise "this" in your first sentence and it should have finished with a question mark).

I would like to tell you a stupid joke related to the green colour.

The husband in the joke is a grocer.

HUSBAND) I need to paint this wall green. First, I will put a ladder against the wall. Please keep the ladder steady.

WIFE) I will. Here is your green paint.

H) (He splashes the green paint all over his body).

W) (Wife says jokingly). Now you are a greengrocer.
