Which are correct:

2-I sent the documents if you wanted to verify something.

3-I sent the documents for reference, in case you wanted to verify something.
4-I sent the documents for reference, if you wanted to verify something.

I think '1' and '3' work. 'If' sounds a bit strange here, I would say.... Maybe '4' does work...

I have no idea why anybody would write "something" in those sentences.

Well, I could have used 'them'. It would make everything simpler.

But it would have changed the meaning.

You have gone on a business trip and you did not have the 'documents' when you left. You could have carried out the negotiations anyway, but I have sent you the 'documents' just in case you are unsure about something (for instance a service we are offering) and wanted to verify it.

The new sentences are better. But I would have used the present prefect is all four cases.
