Are the following sentences grammatically correct?

"She suddenly ran into her great friend, who, using accumulated vacation days from work, traveled for three months through South America."

That's only one sentence.

Who wrote it, and in what context?

You need the past perfect because the travel occurred before the encounter.

"Great friend" isn't very natural in modern American English. Can you think of a different adjective?
