Are the following sentences grammatically correct?

"She suddenly ran into her great friend, who, using accumulated vacation days from work, traveled for three months through South America."

"She suddenly ran into her great friend, who, using accumulated vacation days from work, had traveled for three months through South America."

You need the past perfect because the travel occurred before the encounter.

"Great friend" isn't very natural in modern American English. Can you think of a different adjective?
