My friend has asked me about this sentence which sounds correct to me. "Everyone" is singular so the verb is a third person singular form with "s" But the subordinate clause has a plural verb which my friend questions. He believes it also should be singular but I believe it is fine. What is your opinion, please?

Everyone loves their mother, when they are a child.
