Dear teachers,

Which verb is correct in the following sentence?

"Software is/are different programs in a computer."

My answer is "is" since "software is an uncount noun, but in a simplified text it was "are".

Thanks.

Software is.

This is a general rule, to make the verb agree with the subject.
However, with sentences of this type having two noun phrases either of which could function as subject or complement, you'll often find examples where the verb agrees with the complement.

I agree with you. I would never use "software are".
