“Construction equipment”, “musical instrument” and “writing instrument” are compound nouns and similar in nature, they are equipment/instruments made by man to perform specific tasks, but they are different in structure.
“construction equipment” is noun + noun,
“musical instrument” is adjective + noun,
“writing instrument” is present participle + noun
Other similar examples are “dancing school” and “music school”, “wooden box” and “paper bag”, etc.
