My city is unbearably hot. It's been above 40 degree Celsius for more than twenty days and the forecast said that it would continue for another twenty days. Today, my friend Thomas (his first year in Chongqing) talked with me and said "It's crazy weather, isn't it". I said to him:

Such extreme weather isn't uncommon; it took place three times in the past decade.

The intended meaning is "In the ten years past, from 2014 to 2024, there were three years with the weather above 40 degree Celcius in my city. It's pretty common".

Is my sentence natural?

Don't use 'take place' to talk about general conditions. Use it only for single events.
