Dear teachers...

Could you please elaborate on the meaning of that expression?

Many thanks!

Hello,
I think it's just the game that kids play.
One kid is the hunter and the other kids are the preys.
Once the hunter tags (just touches) a prey, the prey becomes the hunter.
"Tag, you are it!"

Maybe I'm completely wrong, though :-D

**Neither a teacher nor a native speaker.**

Cheers!

Absolutely, it comes from the children's game of "tag."

I use it when we get caught up in a game of "telephone tag" in which we repeatedly leave voicemails for the other person, never catching that person at their desk. After this happens a couple times, instead of saying "Hi, this is Barb, returning your call that returned my call when I left you that message..." I will just say "Hey, it's Barb again. Tag, you're it." And then it's that person's role to try to call me again... etc.

In some parts of the world this game is called 'he' - 'You're it' is the same though.

And when I was at school, it was called "Had". Worked on exactly the same principle though and when you caught someone, you simply tapped them anywhere and said "Had! You're it!"

When I first heard that expression, given the context, I guessed it meant 'Hey, It's your turn now!

So, dear friends, Did I guess right?

Many thanks

 - with a certain sense of relief on the part of the speaker: 'I'm glad I'm not doing it any more'.
