Dear skilled english speakers,

I would like to question you regarding the phrase:

“Thank you so much”.

The alternative “thank you very much” could be consider as equal?

Which is better?

Thank you in advanced.

Welcome to the forum, Lennie. :hi:

I use only 'very', but 'so' is fine.

I don't think that there's a real difference between them, but I always considered "thank you very much" a little bit more formal than "thank you so much". What I mean is that cannot see an (prestigious) actor who is handed an Emmy award saying "thank you so much".

Really? I can see the Queen of England saying "Thank you so much".
"We would like to thank you all so much for the support and loyalty you have shown us during our annus horribilisimus."

Are you sure that accepting an Emmy award illustrates the pinnacle of formality?

I was just trying to give an example and the Emmy award handing was the only one which occurred to me at that moment. For me, "so" denotes slightly more excitement than "very". Maybe I put it in the wrong words, maybe I simply was wrong, either way thank you for the observation.

For me, and this is strictly personal opinion, 'so' is rather more gushy than 'very'.

I bet Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) would.
