I have asked someone if he could do some work for me but he declined. At the end of his mail he wrote:

Thanks for asking, however.

Is 'however' here used in the sense of 'anyway'? Which (however or anyway) is more frequently used?

I would have said "Thanks for asking, though."

The way it was originally written is just another way of saying "However, I would like to thank you for asking me." So your friend is saying that even though he cannot do the work, he is grateful for the offer.

Neither of them is a complete sentence! It's not recommended on this forum to specifically ask for help from native speakers, as many of the non-natives on here have extremely good advice.

However, should you wish to do so, I would say "Do any native speakers have any advice on this matter?"
