Kindly tell me which of the following sentences is/are correct?

1:- The Banyan is kind of fig tree.
2:- The banyan is a kind of fig tree.

Thank you in advance.
 
It is, though you do see the name used with a capital letter too, but the indefinite article is essential for me.
