[Grammar] the other + plural ? singular ?

If there are two apples in a basket can I count it like

" one, the other apple? "
 
Why do you want to do that?
 
I was expecting from the title that you'd be asking about whether to use singular or plural after "the other".
In case you're still interested, you use the singular. "One apple is green. The other is red." If "the other" has a plural noun following it, use the plural. "One apple is green and the other three [apples] are red."
