[Vocabulary] The participants each has/have

The participants each has/have a sports bag for a souvenir.

I thought the answer was 'has'.

I'm confused....with the words 'each' and 'a sports bag', why does the verb go with 'participants'?

Because the participants is the subject. Simplify the sentence and this will be clear: The participants have a bag.
 
And the sports bags don't take home a participant as a souvenir.
