[Grammar] The past perfect tense in a dependent clause

1. Jesus told his disciples he would send them the Holy Spirit once he had resurrected and ascended into Heaven.

2. Jesus told his disciples he would send them the Holy Spirit once he resurrected and ascended into Heaven.

3. Jesus told his disciples he would send them the Holy Spirit once he resurrects and ascends into Heaven.

Which one is correct? or are all these three weird? seriously, one moment I think I know English grammar well enough, the next I am stuck with something like this.:splat:

Only the first one is correct.

Thank you, Bhaisahab. The first one was the sentence I wrote, but I wasn't sure whether or why it was correct. Is there any way to explain why the first one is correct whereas the second one is wrong? As for the third one... well, I included it just in case.

It's the order of events. First he resurrects, then, after doing so, he ascends.

I agree that #1 is correct, but feel that #2 is possible. Perfect aspects are common with 'once', but not obligatory.

Interesting to see the use of "resurrect" in the active sense. I have always encountered the term being used passively, as in "was resurrected". In other words, it's not something one does for oneself [even in Jesus's case], but something which is done by another agency - in this case God the Father.

Let's not get into a theological discussion. I'm only commenting on the language...
