[Grammar] the Summer vs. the summer

I'm embarrassed not to know the whether or not it is proper or improper to phrase as " ... in the Summer of 2006 ... " or " ... in the summer of 2006 ... ". Which is correct? For the purposes of this first question, it's not an aforementioned season being referenced. If, however, it was an aforementioned season, would the first quoted phrase be correct?

The names of seasons are not capitalized in English. (We do capitalize "Summer" is Summer Glau though, for example.)

If you find a grammar book from several decades ago, you will find other guidance, but BC is absolutely right about current usage.

I agree with BC and Barb from the BrE standpoint.

You gave your thread a great title, enabling the system to find Similar Threads (see below). Unfortunately, this feature doesn't help on this occasion, but it's worth knowing for future reference.

Go to the very top of the page and click on Search ​next to 'Google Custom Search'.

When 'Google Custom Search' appears again, type 'summer vs. Summer' in the long empty box and then Search again.​

(Before the forum was 'improved' we could do this in one step rather than two.)​
