Yes, you can replace "point" with "use". Personally I prefer "... it was hopeless" over both "use" and "point".

"Point" and "use" are wrongly used here. If there was no point/use, they wouldn't have been doing it. You are talking about the outcome, which the doctors didn't know yet, so there definitely was a point to doing what they did.
You could say, "... but it turned out to be pointless/useless", although one could even quibble over that. Better: " ... but it was unsuccessful".
