Hi there! :-D

Which sentence sounds more correct and more natural?

1- The room looks large because it has very little furniture in it. OR
2- The room looks large because they have little furniture in it.

1 is correct.

2 would be correct if it began 'Their room looks large...'
 
Would 2 be correct if 'have' was replaced with 'put'?

I had a heated discussion with some non-native teachers of English over the second sentence which I believe is grammatically incorrect because it is anaphorically ambiguous, .i.e. no explicit antecedent. In other words, there is a disagreement between the subject [room] and the personal pronoun [they].

Without a wider context, we don't know who they are.
