Hello,

Can anybody explain to me the meaning of the phrase "this was the way of it"?

"I never suspected that my quiet friend was a wizard. Until that fatal Sunday afternoon I had always supposed that the little black door was a cupboard. This was the way of it."

Aleister Crowley, The Drug, 1909

Thank you

Still not sure what it means but is it possible the sentence "this was the way of it" means something like "that´s how it was" or "this is the way it was then?"

Yes, you're correct.
