Lindsay Lohan's ex-assistant almost took the fall of crashing her car in 2012 when she claimed he was driving. The police didn't buy it, and when her assistant picked her up from the jail next day... she kicked him out of the car.

What does "took the fall of crashing her car" mean ("fall" might be "fail", I am not sure)?
I guess it means "took the responsibility of crashing her car". I am not sure.

Note: Took the fall for crashing the car.

Yes, the person who "takes the fall" for a crime is the one the police charge with the crime. Who serves the punishment. It's usually used in the context of organized crime, or when someone is set up (framed) to take the punishment and the guilty party goes free.

@GoodTaste Please take more care when copying text. The original clearly say "for crashing her car" but you wrote "of crashing her car".
