Transport Fare or fee

I was taught that 'fare' should be used rather than 'fee' when referring to the amount we have to pay for all modes of transportation. However, googling both with quotation marks, I found out that both yield more or less the same results. Is 'transport fee' a correct collocation in English ? or is 'transport fare' indeed the better one? Thanks a lot

In the jargon of those in the business of carrying, fare is the fee for passengers and freight is the fee for cargo.
