[Vocabulary] using 'house' as a verb

Will it be all right if I use 'house' as a verb in this sentence.

Turkey has housed different civilizations and cultures for ages.(I wanted to mean ' Turkey has been home to...')

English teachers around me say that the verb 'house' does not have such a meaning, but Meriam-Webster's Learner's Dictioanry defines this word as

• 3.to store or contain (something)
  4.to surround or enclose (something) in order to protect it

No, 'house' isn't right there. I'd stick with "Turkey has been home to ..."

I agree that it's best not to use 'housed' here. 'Home to' is better. I'd used housed for example with people looking for a home e.g. 'When they arrived, they were housed in council accommodation' near the centre of town.
I would also suggest you change 'for ages' to 'for a very long time'.

I agree that it's best not to use 'housed' here. 'Home to' is better. I'd used housed for example with people looking for a home e.g. 'When they arrived, they were housed in council accommodation' near the centre of town.
I would also suggest you change 'for ages' to 'for a very long time'.
