I know that the verb 'admit' is followed by gerund, then what is 'admit to' and how is used?

I don't like the first example. I wouldn't say it, but perhaps Lauralie is not alone.

What if it were a reduced relative clause?

The first one (Sam admits having the affair, drinking the beer, killing his wife,etc.)sounds natural to me. Perhaps we have here a difference between BrE and NorthAmE.:)

I'm not even sure about that. It may be just a personal thing I can't explain.
