Simple Past Test confusion

1. We did homework when the light went out. ( Correct - We were doing homework when the light went out.)
Or,
2. We drank water when the light went out.
Why 1 is incorrect? but not 2.

I would caution learners against using an automated tool to check grammar. While it may catch and correct some mistakes, it would not be able to do that with all mistakes.

Just to demonstrate the point, I entered:
1- We did our homework when the lights came on.
2- We did our homework when the lights went out.

It complained about #2 but not about #1.
I must point out that while #2 is unusual, it is not ungrammatical.
