Sentence: "Hitler's plan went/gone haywire when his forces lost in Normandy, France"

My question/doubt: Which verb/adjective went/gone would be grammatically correct in this sentence ?

Thanks

plan went haywire

he's gone haywire

"to go haywire" is an idiom that means things happened wrongly.

***neither a teacher nor a native-speaker***

Simple past tense is the only option here.
