"He has gone to a meeting".my boss went for a meeting giving his phone to me to attend on behalf of him. If somebody ask for him over phone what should i tell? boss gone for a meeting or went for a meeting?

They are both ok. I would prefer "to".Which is better?
He has gone to a meeting.
He has gone for a meeting.
