What are the differences between "What day is it?" and "What date is it today?" ?

"What day is it?": You can ask this to someone looking at a calendar.

"What date is it today?": It refers to today.

Also, I'd answer the first with Monday/Tuesday, etc and the second with the 1st/2nd, etc.
